All About Easter

Easter is a holiday that represents the resurrection of Jesus three days after his death from crucifixion. For Christians, Easter is the end of Lent, which is 40 days of praying, fasting, and almsgiving. Fasting is when you can not eat for a certain amount of time, since that is what Jesus had to do. According to Oxford Languages, almsgiving is when you give money, food, or other materials to the less fortunate people with no strings attached. It is a tradition for Lent to fall on the same day as Ash Wednesday, this year it began on February 22nd. The end of Lent is on Holy Thursday, which falls on April 6th. If you participate in Lent, you are supposed to give up something from your everyday life until the 40 day period is over. Many Christians do not eat meat on Fridays because of Good Friday (the day Jesus died on the cross). Easter falls on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon. This year the holiday lands on April 9th, 2023.

There are many traditions that surround this holiday. Before Easter, many people make hard boiled eggs and dye them. These eggs may be later turned into deviled eggs to eat during dinner on Easter. On Easter, parents fill plastic eggs with candy, and hide these eggs in their yard or possibly in their house. After the eggs are hidden, their children would search for these eggs using their easter baskets to hold them. Many people go to church on Easter Sunday. According to Mike Ellis, a writer for Independent Mail, more people go to church on Easter Sunday than any other day. Since Easter is based on Christianity, people feel the need to “seek out religious service” to further celebrate.

Like Christmas, Easter has a mythical “figure,” the Easter Bunny, that brings children gifts while they sleep. On the morning of Easter, kids wake up to their easter baskets full of treats that were left by the Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny has been a part of Easter tradition for many years. According to The History Channel, “the Easter Bunny first arrived in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called Osterhase.” Their children made nests for a creature to lay colored eggs inside. Later, it was spread around in the U.S. that rabbits would bring chocolate, candy, and different types of gifts and a basket on the morning of Easter for the children.

Making a tasty Easter dinner takes up a large amount of time but it’s worth it when you get to enjoy the delicious food with the people you love most. A traditional Easter dinner consists of ham, potatoes, and vegetables, such as corn, green beans or asparagus, as well as some yummy bread rolls. After the main dishes, people like to prepare some delicious desserts for their guests, such as carrot cake, Easter bread, or even just some banana pudding. According to Modernist Bread, Easter Bread symbolizes that Christ has risen. When all of the fun festivities and dinner is over families like to spend the rest of the night spending quality time together.
