Since 1970, every April 22nd we have celebrated Earth Day. Earth Day was created due to the extreme air and water pollution in the world, as well as a way to raise awareness on environmental issues that were not well known. According to “The History of Earth Day”, on the first ever Earth Day, 10% of the United States’ population demonstrated against the pollution that many industries were contributing to. The day aligned people with many different viewpoints all over America with one similar goal: to protect our earth. Since that day, many policies, acts, and laws have been put into place to do just that, such as, the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act.
With climate change becoming an important issue, action still needs to take place in order to keep our planet safe. On Earthday.org, you can find many different ways to take part in Earth Day. They link petitions you can sign, groups you can join, information on fast fashion, eating green, climate crises, and many other actions to take to make a difference. They also have a map of events all around the world that you can attend for Earth Day.
This year, there were many local events for Earth Day, including a creek clean up in Youngstown, a park clean up at Mill Creek, and Earth Day Yoga in Youngstown. A little farther out in Cleveland, there are a multitude of events that can be found on Earth Day 2023 Events & Celebrations in Cleveland | AllEvents.in.
Recently, Mrs. DiRienzo’s Green Team club collected recycling from each classroom in the school in order to support a cleaner earth. The Green Team is a great club to get involved in as a student if you are interested in helping clean up our community.
