Student Teacher Interview

At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. DiRienzo-Olson was kind enough to let Miss Carnia Cummings shadow her. Miss Cummings is attending Youngstown State University for Italian Education and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Miss Cummings has always wanted to go into education ever since she was in high school. What really sealed the deal for her was her Italian teacher, Maddalena Amero, who taught at Boardman. She said that her Italian teacher helped her find her passion for the Italian language.

Miss Cumming’s experience teaching includes teaching Italian at Ursuline in the Spring of 2022 and at Niles McKinley High School in the fall of 2022. She also has experience teaching English language learners at Campbell High School in the fall of 2021 and Rayen Early College in the Spring of 2022. Not only does her passion for teaching Italian help her to become the best Italian teacher she can be, but it is also her pure enjoyment of learning new things about the Italian language. Miss Cummings said, “I found learning Italian so fun and interesting and I wanted to make others feel the same way about learning a language.”

Her experience at Lowellville has been great and everyone has been very welcoming. She is enjoying the process of getting to know fellow staff members and the students. She feels like she has already learned so much from Mrs. DiRienzo-Olson.Miss Cummings has enjoyed her time at Lowellville so much that she has applied for the current opening for a new Italian teacher in the fall.

Miss Cummings would consider taking the drama club under her wing if she is hired as the new Italian teacher. She said she would love to do it but has much to live up to. As for her background in theater, she has performed many musicals in her high school career. Her first performance was in fourth grade where she played an orphan in the musical “Annie”. In total, she has been in eight musicals all at Boardman High School. Her favorite musical was The Wedding Singers. She loves traveling all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York to watch Broadway and touring Broadway musicals, and her favorite musical is The Book of Mormon.

Even though Miss Cummings is hard at work, she does have some free time. During her free time, she loves going to coffee shops and watching TikTok. Her favorite coffee shop is You Me Oui located on Boardman-Canfield Road by the Blue Wolf Tavern.

Lastly, Miss Cummings has some advice for students. She said, “ Whatever you do in life, make sure it is something that you love and if you still don’t know what you want to do, that is okay, you are still so young and have time to figure it out.” It was a pleasure to be able to work with Miss. Cummings and wish her the best of luck in her future teaching career!
