Over thirty-five years have passed since Nintendo produced and published the iconic video game Super Mario, which has left a lasting mark on the gaming industry. On February 12, 2023, Universal opened Super Mario World theme park in Los Angeles,California. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, not only designed the park, but also contributed to the attractions within it.
The entrance to the attraction begins by passing through the recognizable green warp pipes featured in the classic video game, complete with mesmerizing lights illuminating the space. After passing through these pipes, guests who attend this park are considered players and will find themselves inside Peach's castle without having experienced any of the outside world's effects. This world has multiple different attractions, just like the video game within the Super Mario world. The Mario Kart Bowser challenge is one attraction included. Attendants will have head mounted AR goggles and will be seated stadium style in 4 seat vehicles. They will compete for the golden cup on courses from the video game. Another attraction is Mount Beanpole; this towering landmark rests at the center of this world and will act as the entry cue from the Mario Kart Bowser challenge before entering Bowser's castle. The home base to Mario Kart will provide guests with context on how Bowser has calculated his plans to defeat team Mario in order to face off on the track.
The story line is based on the character Bowser Jr. stealing the golden keys from the Mushroom Kingdom. Players (guests) need to collect three golden keys in order to gain access to a final boss battle with the Little Koopa. This is where the guests can participate in the mini games to get these keys including: Goomba Crazy Crank, Koopa Troopa POWer Punch, Piranha Plant Nap Mishap, and Thwomp Panel Panic. Collecting 3 keys allows guests to enter into Bowser Jrs lair and compete in a special mini-game.
Guests visiting the park have to pay the general theme park admission of $100-$200 dollars. These guests have the option of purchasing a powerband for an additional cost of $40, which are used to play mini games in the land and unlock digital coins and badges on the Universal App. The band comes in six different styles and are based on the Super Mario characters. The characters include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Princess Daisy. The band that is chosen will correspond with the team you are assigned to during gameplay.
