The Man, the Myth, the Legend

Steven Hunt has been the study hall teacher at Lowellville High School for 26 years and has been coaching football and basketball for over 35 years. Hunt’s favorite sport is football, he enjoys watching it, as well as playing it. In addition to working and coaching at Lowellville, he coached football for Campbell High School for 15 years. Some of his favorite aspects of working at Lowellville are that “it is very interesting, everyday is different with no papers to be graded.” He loves the environment in the school, he has great relationships with the students. The students treat him with respect and couldn’t be happier with how he returns the favor.

Mr. Hunt is a very good motivator and pushes everyone to be the best they could be”. He knows they all have a lot of potential and wants to help to make everyone a better person. He pushes everyone to be the best they can. Whether they appreciate it or not, he does it regardless to make sure of it. He is straight up and tells you the truth everyday, whether this is in sports or what can be improved with your academic life.

Mr. Hunt has plenty of lessons and sayings that he loves to say to his students and athletes. All the students love this about him. He is always looking to give advice to everyone and he is very easy to talk to. A student from Lowellville High School Averi Shumaker said , “he is very understanding and he would help anyone if they needed it.” After giving out advice, Mr. Hunt likes to say, “I ain’t sayin’, I’m just sayin.’”

His favorite food and drink is pizza and Tang. He likes pizza the most, “especially in this Youngstown area.” Hunt says, there are many varieties of pizza. When asked why Tang is his favorite drink he said, “it’s an astronaut's drink”. He always asks his students where his Tang is, and if they’re bringing him any. Nick Lucente, a 2014 graduate, brought him a whole container of Tang and now Hunt asks every week where his Tang is. His favorite hobby is just competing in anything, he loves to compete.

Hunt wasn’t sure how to answer the question, “What is your best sports memory and why?” He has so many good memories that he couldn’t choose just one. He goes on to explain that he has been a part of a lot of championships but also a part of 0-10 teams as well, “it is just all about being in the moment.”

Growing up Hunt’s role model was his high school head football coach, Brian Cross, whom the players referred to as “Schizo” because one minute he was very friendly and the next he was up in your face. He is in the OHSAA hall of hame for coaching football because he got over hundreds of wins over his career. When he left Pymatuning Valley he coached at Eastmore High School in Columbus, which is the school that the only 2 time hiesman trophy winner went (Archie Griffin)

Mr. Hunt’s advice for the class of 2023 is “ be bold, be courageous.”
