This year Lowellville's Spelling Bee has started back up after a two-year-long hiatus. A total of 30 students from the elementary and middle school participated in the competition. This year's Spelling Bee was held on December 2, 2022. It was separated into two groups, third-fifth grades and sixth-eighth grades. Mrs. Deluca, Mrs. Havrilla, and Mrs. Firmstone were chosen to judge the spellers while Mrs.DiRienzo announced the words.
The winning words of the third-fifth grade Spelling Bee were rituals and embrace spelled correctly by fourth grader Roland Swanson. The runner up was a third grader, Karina Cruz. The winning words of the sixth-eighth grade Spelling Bee were conifers and vestments. The winner of the sixth-eighth spelling bee was Steven Yon, a sixth grader. Michael Matasic, also from the sixth grade, was the runner-up. Steven and Michael went head to head for several rounds during the Spelling Bee. Steven and Roland, winners of the spelling bee, will be representing Lowellville in the Regional Spelling Bee at Youngstown State University.
We had the honor of talking to both winners, Roland Swanson and Steven Yon. Roland shared with us that he was very surprised he won because he was younger and he thought a fifth grader would win. He is excited to see how he will do in the next spelling bee contest and how far he will go. Steven Yon said he was also surprised he won because he thought Micheal would win. He said he is nervous for the Regional Spelling Bee. Best of luck to Roland and Steven in the upcoming Regional Spelling Bee at Youngstown State University!
