Do you enjoy taking a quick ice skating trip before making it to school? I know I don’t and I am sure that my fellow peers and teachers don’t either. After the first few days of snow the parking lots become slippery and a hazard. We lose parking spots in the student parking lot and we hardly ever have shoveled or salted sidewalks to get from our cars to the front door. I always make jokes about how I should bring my ice skates to get from my car to the front door. We have staff members and students fall or slide on ice in the parking lots every year.
After having the pleasure of speaking with Mrs. Kerpsack, we found out that there are some concerns with the teacher parking lot. When Mrs. Kerpsack comes to school if she sees snow and ice in the parking lot, she drives slowly, keeping in mind that the teacher parking lot is on a bit of a hill. There have been many stories about teachers and staff members slipping and falling on their way into the building. Luckily, Mrs. Kerpsack has never completely fallen but she has slipped and dropped most of her things, including her coffee.
Now, the student parking is a whole different story once the winter season comes around. We lose one or two parking spots every year because they always plow the snow into the last two spots closest to the football field. The sidewalks are never salted so they always turn into sheets of ice. Students dread getting out of their cars because they know that they are going to slip and maybe even fall on the sidewalks. After speaking with student driver Frankie Lellio she has shared her feelings and thoughts about the parking situation. She gets irritated when they pile up the snow in the two parking spots because it causes her to have to park further down and walk farther to get into the building. When she gets to school and sees that the sidewalks are covered in snow and ice she gets very angry because she then ends up with snow in her shoes. As many other students have, she slides everyday multiple times a day.
Students and staff are concerned about the conditions of the parking lots and sidewalks and hope that they will be shoveled, salted, and kept up as much as possible during the winter months in order to prevent falls and possible serious injuries.
