As Ash Wednesday approaches, many Catholics in the area are preparing to give up meat every Friday for the next 40 days. Since many people eat fish instead of meat on Fridays, several churches and restaurants start selling their Friday fish specials. There are several choices throughout Mahoning County and other surrounding areas, some of which have a reputation for great fish. Whether it be because of the service, quality, or even extra side dishes some just have a special aspect to them. This is a compiled list of our favorite places to get fish and other meals during the Lenten season.
The first place on the list is the annual fish fry at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers, Ohio. This fish fry is held annually during the Lenten Season in the St. Nicholas Church Hall. Their fish fry sales usually start around Ash Wednesday. They have baked and fried fish and have some additional dishes like mac and cheese that come with the meal. Their fried fish has an amazing batter that gives just the right amount of crunch and flavor to the fish. They are inexpensive for a really good quality meal.
The second place is the Knoll Run Golf Course in Lowellville, Ohio. Although it is a golf course they have some of the best food and service around. Another great place for fish fry is Bedford Trails Golf Course. Bedford Trails has good service, a nice variety of side dishes, and the quality of the fish itself is amazing.
