Valentine’s Day Celebrations

Valentine's Day is a special day dedicated to expressing love and affection for another person, which is traditionally celebrated on the 14th of February every year. Most Americans take this day as an opportunity to show their appreciation for someone by buying flowers, chocolates, as well as writing letters or cards and surprising their significant other. There are other ways to celebrate such as staying home and watching a movie, going out, or doing activities that you both enjoy, like having a game night. If you don't have anyone to celebrate with, why not make a day of it? Here’s how some people at our school spend their Valentine’s Day.

The students in elementary school have a party with their classmates. Some of them make boxes and some bring in treats. This gives them the chance to feel included even though they may not have a specific valentine.

I spoke with 8th graders Felicia Mentzer, Riley Goodin, and Emily Cleland about their Valentine’s Day plans. Felicia is planning on spending time with her boyfriend and his sister at home. They don’t have specific plans for the night; they just want to be able to spend quality time together. Riley will be spending her Valentine’s Day at basketball practice, but afterwards she is looking forward to going out to dinner with her family. Emily’s mom makes her a Valentine’s Day basket which typically includes different chocolates, a card, and a small gift. Emily enjoys going out with the whole family for dinner.

Senior Frankie Lellio, is looking forward to receiving a stuffed animal and a box of chocolates from her dad like she does every year. She then watches either Grey’s Anatomy or Can You Keep a Secret.

High school teacher, Mrs.Dent, treats the day as a small anniversary. Typically, she and her husband exchange a small gift. Before they got married they used to go out on a date, but now because of their different schedules, it is nice to exchange gifts.

Ms. DiRienzo and Mr. Olson buy each other chocolates and some flowers but the holiday has no important meaning to them. Ms. DiRienzo stated that, “A thoughtfully written card is more valuable and meaningful to me than any material thing.” Valentine’s Day looks different for everyone, so no matter your age or relationship status there's something for everyone to enjoy!
