The Youngstown area has many small businesses ranging from bakeries, restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, and sportswear. The general public plays an important part in keeping these businesses open by purchasing from them. By purchasing from a small business rather than a bigger company, consumers are helping a local resident and their family.
A popular local small business is Lowellville’s own Ross’ Market. Ross’ is located on E. Liberty Street and is well known in the Lowellville community. This market is family owned by Earl and Sylvia Ross, and has been open for over 35 years. They offer a wide range of things like snacks, drinks, lottery tickets, and an interesting antique section.
Another popular small business is One Hot Cookie located in Boardman. According to their website, “One Hot Cookie started in 2013 in Downtown Youngstown on a whim as a side hustle for Bergen Giordani, a single mother to her then 16 year old daughter, Morgen. Fast forward nearly 9 years and quite a bit has changed except for the nearly famous chocolate chip cookie recipe and their love of their dogs.” One Hot Cookie features a variety of different cookie flavors and other sweet treats. Sophomore Gianna Clement is a big fan of this bakery and gets their cookies on special occasions. Her favorite cookie is the M&M cookie, although she likes the large array of flavors One Hot Cookie has to offer and encourages customers to try them.
OH Donut Co is One Hot Cookie’s sister company and offers a variety of treats such as donuts, coffee, breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, and handcrafted drinks. Some popular donut flavors are s’mores, vanilla sprinkle, peanut butter cup frenzy, and fruity pebbles. As well as being able to order online, you can eat in at 1315 Boardman Canfield Road and 101 S. Main Street. Sophomore Joslyn Delsignore has eaten their donuts and thinks they are delicious and likes the variety of flavors they provide.
If you’re looking for organic coffee, Stone Fruit Coffee Company, owned by Josh Langenheim, is the place for you. I Stone Fruit has four locations including one in the Southern Park Mall. They provide a wide variety of different coffees and pastries. Aryana Romano, a sophomore, goes to Stone Fruit almost every day. Her favorite drink from the menu is an iced latte with pumpkin flavoring. Aryana thinks it's very delicious and the workers are very nice.
Soup City Designs offers a wide variety of customized apparel and accessories. If you can imagine it, they can make it. Soup City Designs works with multiple schools in the area, including Lowellville, to provide us with our spirit wear. They are a family owned business that started in Campbell, Ohio but have moved their store to Market Street in Boardman, Ohio. Krissy Cruz, the coach for the little Rocket Cheerleading team, uses Soup City Designs for her team. She said, “The owners always go above and beyond to make sure our Little Rockets get whatever they need for their uniform, and spirit wear needs.”
