Have you ever opened your Easter basket and found a piece of candy that you hate? Media students Madison Esposito and Olivia Lavernuick asked Lowellville students which Easter candy they believed was the worst and the best. Students chose between Peeps, jelly beans, and Whoppers’ Robin Eggs. These candies were chosen because they are some of the most well-known Easter candies. After gathering the results, Whoppers’ Robin Eggs is believed to be the worst Easter candy, with 40% of students voting it is the worst. Shockingly, they’re also believed to be the best Easter candy, with 36.7% of people voting for it.
Maddie and Olivia were not shocked by the results of the worst candy because both of them believed that Whoppers would be voted the worst Easter candy. Although both were right, they didn’t think that it would also win as the best Easter candy. Maddie predicted that Peeps would win and Olivia believed that jelly beans would win.
After speaking to another classmate Shannyn Phillips, she believed that Whoppers would be the best and Peeps the worst. The reason she believed that Peeps would be the worst is that she enjoys Whoppers and jelly beans more and eats them more often. Shannyn only eats Peeps during Easter.
Classmate Evan Alfano explained how he does not like Peeps or jelly beans at all. He says “Peeps make me want to throw up and jelly beans are gross.” He did tell us that he does like Whoppers and he chose those as his favorite. Peeps and jelly beans are tied for his least favorite. He doesn’t like Peeps and jelly beans because they are both way too sweet for him.
When and where did these candies originate? Peeps were created by Bob Born, in 1953. According to the website Just Born, it initially took 27 hours to make just one Peep. In today's technology, it takes just six minutes. They are extremely popular worldwide, over 700 million are consumed every year. Peeps are so popular that they are made for other holidays now such as Christmas and Halloween. Although they are very popular, some people hate them. A lot of people do not enjoy these festive candies because they are very sticky and are made of pure sugar. Each peep has 6.8g of sugar which is equivalent to two teaspoons of sugar.
Jelly beans were invented in 1861, originally for the soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War. This sugary, bean-shaped candy was invented by William Scrafft, a sweets maker in Boston. Jelly beans became affiliated during Easter in the 1930s, because of their egg-like shape. Therefore, the shape is similar to the belief that the Easter Bunny is delivering eggs as a sign of new life in spring.
Lastly, no one knows when Whoppers Robin Eggs hit the market. . According to Hershey Archives, the egg-shaped candy was released somewhere between 1949 and 1952. The original version of this candy had no sugary coating on top and was larger in size. The Robin Eggs are only available during the Easter season and can be found in stores four weeks before Easter.
