Regular Season Baseball Recap

It’s approaching summer time and spring sports are coming to an end. The spring sports offered at Lowellville are softball, baseball, and track. Today, we are going to be recapping the boys baseball season. Last season the Rockets ended up with a 5-15 record, and a loss in the district semifinals to the Jackson Milton Blue Jays. With the regular season recently wrapping up, the Rockets have ended this year with an overall record of 4-10, and a conference record of 2-9. Lowellville’s wins this year came against the Campbell Red Devils, Leetonia Bears, Mineral Ridge Rams, and Western Reserve Blue Devils.

When asked his thoughts about the season as we head into post-season play, player Cody Nolfi said, “On paper it might seem like we had a bad season, but I’d disagree, we may not have gotten as many wins as we’d like, but overall I’m proud of the team and what we’ve accomplished. I’m pretty confident in our team and I think we have a good shot of making a run in the playoffs,” Cody Nolfi said. “This year I've learned about the importance of selflessness and putting the team before yourself, I think that’s really the key to winning,” Cody Nolfi said.

The Rockets took on the Windham Bombers in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs. They came out with the win 18-14, Ricky Palumbo started the game for the Rockets but was later relieved by Dylan Okular and Brady Bunofsky. Later, the Rockets played the Mathews Mustangs in the OHSAA district semi-final, where Brady Bunofsky pitched a complete game for the Rockets, giving up 8 hits and striking out 2. Eventually the Mustangs got the best of the Rockets with the final score being 7-5, bringing the Rockets season to a close.

When asked about the expectations for next year, player Nick Donatelli said, “I hope to step up into a bigger role within the team, I also hope we can win more games and just work hard as a team everyday.I’ve really learned the importance of working hard to earn your spot, and I’m really excited to prove myself next season,” Nick Donatelli said.

Player Christian Coira said, “Overall I think we had a good season, the numbers may not show that, but we had a lot of great moments such as our win against Windham, or our win against Mineral Ridge on senior night.”

Congratulations to the players and coaches on a great season and good luck to the Rockets next year, GO ROCKETS!
