2023 District Track Meet
The District Track Meet is split into two days, this year it was May 17th and 19th. Day one consists mainly of preliminary events to see who gets to move onto day two. Day two is finals, and the top four competitors in each event will earn their spot at the Regional track meet. The District meet was held at Springfield High School in New Middletown, Ohio. The Rockets had a great showing this year.
The first day began on a good note as the boys 4x800m relay placed 2nd place with a time of 8:38.68 and will be moving onto regionals. The boys and girls 4x800m relay is one of five events that is a final on the first day of the meet, along with boys long jump, boys discus, and girls shot put and girls high jump. Senior, discus school record holder, Anthony Lucente had a great showing in the ring,, as he threw 156 feet and 3 inches winning the district in the discus throw. This was another school record, this was the second time this year he has broken his previously held record. The Rockets made some noise in the high jump as Freshman Hannah Morris placed 7th overall with a height of 4 feet and 6 inches. At the end of day one the Lady Rockets finished with 1.5 points and the Lowellville Boys with 18.
Senior Averi Shumaker kicked things off for the Lady Rockets, beginning the second day with a victory in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.85. She also placed 3rd overall in the 300m hurdles (51.56). Sophia Yon placed 2nd in both the 1600m (5:19.79) and 3200m (12:28.93). The relay teams for the Lady Rocket also had a great showing. The 4x200m relay consisting of Aryanna Romano, Sophia Melillo, Hadassah Rivera, and Averi Shumaker, placed 4th overall with a time of 1:55.04. The 4x400m relay, ran by Aryana Romano, Averi Shumaker, Sophia Melillo, and Sophia Yon, placed 4th overall with a time of 4:24.45. All of the athletes will be moving onto regionals. The Lady Rockets finished 5th place overall with a total of 57.50 points.
On the boys’ side Junior Michael Ballone started things off with a win in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.31.e He won the 300m hurdles (40.67). Senior Anthony Lucente kept things going, taking second place in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet and 8.5 inches. Freshman Drew Modelski followed up by taking 1st place in the 200m with a time of 22.965, and 2nd overall in the 100m (11.47). The Rockets actually took 1st and 2nd place in the 200m, as Junior Braylen Dabney ran a 22.968 to take second. In the 400m freshman Josh Pazel had a great showing placing 2nd overall, with a time of 52.22. Onto the mid-distance, Junior Mathew Lucido took 2nd place in the 800m with a time of 2:03.23.Senior Ryan Hvisdak also placed in the 800m, he placed 5th with a 2:09.28. Our distance runners, Junior Michael Katula took 1st in the 3200m with a 10:15.20 and 3rd in the 1600m (4:42.77). Freshman Nathan Yon followed, taking 3rd place in the 3200m (10:37.98) and 4th in the 1600m (4:46.72). All Athletes above that placed in the top four are moving onto regionals. Finally, the boys relay teams really made a statement taking 1st place in all three relays. The 4x100m relay was run by Braylen Dabney, Vinny Ballone, Drew Modelski, and Tylin Dabney had a time of 44.46. . The 4x200m relay was run by Braylen Dabney, Vinny Ballone, Drew Modelski, and Josh Pazel who ran with a time of 1:3105, breaking their previous record. Lastly, the 4x400m relay run byBraylen Dabney, Vinny Ballone, Mathew Lucido, and Michael Ballone ran a time of 3:28.11 to end the meet with a victory. The Lowellville boys finished the meet 1st overall with a total of 149 points, winning the district for the first time in school history!
Congratulations to the entire Lowellville track team on an extremely successful season so far. Good luck to everyone who qualified for the regional track meet, it will be held at Norwayne High School in Creston, Ohio.
