Every year Lowellville 5th grade students take their annual trip to Camp Fitch. The trip consisted of three days full of many fun activities, such as hiking, horseback riding, indoor rockwall, walking on the beach, crafts, and meeting reptiles and amphibians. The students were split into two smaller groups to complete these activities.
On the first day of camp the students learned about reptiles and amphibians at the nature center. One of our teachers, Mr. Solak, taught them about the different reptiles and amphibians. He even allowed them to hold some of them. Students in group one learned about lake Erie and the other Great Lakes in Lake Erie Studies taught by Mrs. Freed. They also learned about the history of the lake and walked along the beach. Students in group two participated in an activity called Survival in Bills Barn. During this activity students learned many valuable skills like starting a fire, building shelter if ever needed, and how to make a signal for help. The students also had an hour before dinner called option time where they got to choose any activity they wanted to do, as long as their option was available.
The second day was full of other activities including Lake Erie studies, Pioneer Crafts, Archery, Horsemanship, Indoor Rockwall, Challenge Course, and Survival. In pioneer crafts, Mr. Olson, taught the students about how people used to live their lives long ago. He taught the students how to make butter and allowed them to participate in making candles. Group one participated in the Challenge course which was an exercise of being able to focus on multiple things at one. Students would say another student's name and throw something at them. When you caught the item you had to say thank you and throw it to another person. Gradually things were added in and it became more difficult but the student successfully got through the items. Groups participated in opposite activities from the day before. They also learned to use a bow and arrow in archery, ride a horse in horsemanship, and climb a rockwall. At the end of the day everyone played games and were surrounded by a fire to sing some camp songs.
On the last and final day the students woke up bright and early to pack their bags and enjoy their final activities. Group one participated in Bills Barn and group two enjoyed the challenge course. After their activities, all of the students ate brunch and prepared to say goodbye.
The students enjoyed their time at the camp and were sad to go but were excited to see their parents and their own beds. Some of the students hope that one day they will get to go back or maybe even become a counselor when they are in high school. Many 5th grade students shared their favorite part of the Camp Fitch trip.Student Maggie Mastronikolas enjoyed the time she got to spend with her friends. She liked the activity after dinner where students had to work together to build a monster. Student Frankie Loftus liked the food and many of the activities such as seeing the reptiles and amphibians. Student Robert Giovanni enjoyed participating in archery. Vanessa Osman enjoyed being productive and had fun making candles. The students enjoyed learning new skills and being in the great outdoors.
