Once a year at Lowellville High School, the students in the Italian Club go on a field trip with the Italian teacher, Mrs. DiRienzo-Olson, and her family members. This field trip consists of making pasta and gnocchi. The students are able to buy either of these for $5.00 afterwards. This trip teaches students not only how to cook Italian dishes, but how to work together within a group. The students were served the gnocchi after they had made it. Gnocchi is an “Italian version of a dumpling” according to the article Allrecipes, Gnocchi. It is made of flour, eggs, and mashed potatoes.
After eating the gnocchi, they began making the pasta. For making pasta, you only need flour and some eggs. Like the gnocchi, the students had to put the eggs inside of the flour and mix it slowly until it became a good consistency. Once this was done, the students had machines that would flatten the dough then cut into the lines of spaghetti with the same machine and put in bags for all of the students who purchased it to take home.
Once the students were done cooking, they got to go to their tables and eat pizza with their friends. The students all loved the experience. Lexi Vanca and Sydney Littleton said they would love to go on this field trip again next year. Maddie Esposito said, “I loved the pasta field trip so much, I'd love to keep it going”.
Students Aryanna Romano and Maddie Esposito said their favorite parts of this trip were spending time with both their friends, and Mrs. DiRienzio-Olson’s Nonna. Maddie Esposito said, “Italian will not be the same without them. I’m going to miss Mrs. D and the Italian field trips.”
Mrs. D is planning on retiring this year so all of the students are going to miss her in the years to come. We all thank Mrs. D for being a wonderful teacher and for making this trip possible.
