What is senioritis? According to the article, “What is Senioritis” by Ashlynn Konold the idea of senioritis started in 1907 and has kept going from there. The definition according to Merriam-Webster “is an ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades” which is what most if not all seniors face in their last year of high school. To Alex and Frankie senioritis means, “ students who are seniors begin to get tired of school and wish for it to be done as soon as possible.”
Senior Evan Alfano says he does have senioritis and it started after the first 9 weeks of school. “I was just ready to be done and was excited for what was next. Now that the end of the year is here I know I am going to miss it tremendously.” Senioritis did not affect his grades but he is simply just ready to be done with high school.
We also had the opportunity to interview senior Averi Shumaker about her thoughts about senioritis and what it means to her. “I started getting senioritis my first week of school because I knew it was my last year. It never affected my grades but it made me do things at the last minute.”
Brooke Ginnis’ senioritis started at the beginning of the year. She said, “it is extremely difficult for me to get out of bed every morning.” Brooke said how it affected her grades a little bit. She stated, “I just don’t feel like doing anything anymore but it has not affected my social life.” When asking Brooke if she felt ready for college and adulthood, she said, “I'm going to wing it, and hope for the best.”
Senioritis affected Sidney Price outside of school as well. When she leaves the building all she feels like doing is relaxing at home in her bed. “After school I usually go get some food and relax until my mom gets home and then we watch Bones together.”
When it comes to the realization of being a senior, you may never get the high school experience again, but you will be able to keep those memories with you forever. Frankie’s and Alex’s senioritis really started to kick in while writing this so this is all we got…
