Mental Health in LHS

Social, mental, and physical health are all part of the “wellness triangle” that everyone strives for. Due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and other incidents in our school, students may be having a hard time holding up their mental health and supporting their overall wellness. One of our school counselors, Mrs. Killingsworth was willing to give some insight into mental health and the effects it has on our students.

When asked what advice she has for someone who is struggling with their mental health, Mrs. Killingsworth said that the most important thing to do is ask for help. However, not everyone will ask for help when they need it, so sometimes it’ll be up to the people around them to look out for key signs that they need help. Three of the biggest signs, according to Mrs. Killingsworth, are self-isolation, if someone stops doing the things they love, and a sudden and/or drastic change in personality. If you notice any of these happening to someone, you can contact Mrs. Killingsworth or Mrs. Granito with any concerns by email, in person, or if someone is being bullied you can use the Bully Tipline (330-965-2848)

Mrs. Killingsworth stated she is seeing more anxiety in students today. Another thing she sees is anxiety in LGBTQ students in the school because many of these students report such feelings. When you look at your own wellness it is important to know that while often overlooked it still needs to be acknowledged. Mrs. Killingsworth stated, “Mental health is as or more important than physical health, I think.”

Our counselors here at Lowellville have a lot to offer if you or someone you know is in need of help. They are able to help with emotional and social counseling and they can help get someone connected to a clinical therapist if needed. We also have a school social worker, Mrs. Margaret, who is available as well. Those who are having trouble with their own mental health can reach out and get the help they deserve. Additionally, everyone should look out for the people around them. If you notice any of these changes in your friends let someone know.
