Do female athletes get the same attention as male athletes? According to the article “The NCAA’s Focus on Profit Means Far More Gets Spent on Men’s Championships” from NPR Sports, a law firm “found the NCAA spent $4,285 for men's Division I and National Championship participants, excluding basketball. For female participants, the NCAA spent about $1,700 less that same 2018-19 season”. This does not just happen in college sports, it happens in high school too.
Athlete Savannah Procick who plays volleyball, basketball, and track agrees that females do not get the same attention stating, “Personally I think that this needs to change and that there should be more excitement behind women's sports. It’s just not fair to see males getting all this attention while women who work just as hard get nothing.”
Athlete Lily Vari-Coppola, who plays cross country and basketball agrees with Savannah. Lily says, “I feel like with our community it has been this way for so long that it’s natural for people to just not care as much.” One of the most noticeable differences for Lily is when she looks up at the stands during the game and sees many empty seats.
I agree with Savannah and Lily. I play volleyball, golf, basketball, and track. Last year during basketball season our team made it to the district semi finals which is the furthest our team has ever gone. I asked to have shirts made for us but that did not happen, we did not get a pep assembly, or anything for that matter. However, the boys for basketball made it just as far and got a pep assembly and shirts made for the student section to wear. Why does it seem as if the boys’ teams get more recognition? Is it because they are more popular? Better athletes? Or because it is more of an accomplishment?
Athlete Anthony Lucente who plays football, basketball, and track is one male athlete who agrees female athletes do not always get as much recognition as male athletes.Lucente says, “Yes, I think it’s because people don’t think females have the same abilities that males do. Females should get the same opportunities that males get to make sure it stays equal.”
Athlete Vinny Ballone plays football, basketball, and track. He agrees with Anthony Lucente but talks about how it is the same in the pros, too. Ballone says, “The NBA pays their players millions of dollars more than what the WNBA players get paid even though they do the same thing for entertainment. Just like in high school, female athletes just don’t get the same recognition as males.”
Brady Bunofsky plays football, basketball. track, and baseball has a slightly different perspective. He says, “They don’t get the same attention because they simply just aren’t as good.”
Yes, boys’ sports are often more interesting to watch but that is because they are a lot stronger than girls physically. In basketball the fans experience the excitement when someone dunks but girls don’t dunk the ball. However, girls practice and play hard, too, and would love to see people come out to give them the support and recognition they deserve.
