Home Alone: Lowellville Students' Favorite

Nothing gets me ready for the holidays more than a classic Christmas movie. I sent out a survey asking Lowellville students which Christmas movie was their favorite. The students had the option to choose: Santa Clause, A Christmas Story, Elf, Home Alone, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, or The Polar Express. Although there were a few ties in the beginning, it was clear which movie was the winner by the end. According to Lowellville High School Students, Home Alone is the best Christmas film.

Home Alone is a classic Christmas movie focusing on 8 year-old-boy Kevin McCallister played by Macaulay Culkin. Kevin was accidentally left home alone while his family went on a Christmas vacation to Paris. While Kevin is enjoying his time unattended, he comes to find that two burglars are trying to break into his home. Throughout the movie, we watch Kevin amusingly set up traps for these men and ultimately get the burglars arrested. The Wet Bandits played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are some of the funniest villains in film history. Home Alone is a timeless holiday classic that has entertained all ages for over 30 years.

Home Alone is the second highest-grossing Christmas film in the world. Although it may not be everyone’s favorite, there is no doubt that Home Alone is definitely a staple of many students’ Christmas season. When speaking with my classmate Casey Gordon who voted for Home Alone, he believes that it is a family-friendly movie that makes you “careful what you wish for”.

Other students like Bobby Loftus, disagreed. He thinks that there isn't anything special about the movie and believes that it is too publicized. Instead, Bobby voted for The Polar Express.

The reason that Home Alone is such a beloved holiday movie is because of its clever and well-written script. The movie is filled with memorable characters and it's heartwarming message is not to take your family for granted. Despite the comedic moments and exciting action, the movie ultimately reminds us of the importance of family and the joy of being together during the holidays.
