To Work or Not to Work

Between work, sports, extracurricular activities and chores, students today have very busy schedules. There are many different opinions on having a part-time job as a student in high school. Some people love working in order to make money. While other people think it is stressful trying to maintain a job, complete school work, and stay involved in extracurriculars at the same time. Students at Lowellville High School were interviewed on how they felt about having a part-time job.

Evan Alfano works at Bedford Trails Golf Course year round. He said the environment is great for working at a golf course at a young age. He said it's local, very inviting and it's not hard to work there at all. Evan works two days and around 20 hours a week. He said it has not affected him much, since he usually works on weekends. But some things that he would like to do on Saturdays he can’t do because of work. He explained that he needs to work in order to make money so he can go out with friends. Many popular activities require money, and having a job allows you to be able to do those things.

Laila McCaughtry works at Handels in Poland. She likes working there because of the people and likes making money. Laila works four hours a day three days a week. Laila also hasn’t been affected much by working but she has less free time with work and homework.

Olivia Lavernuick works at IGA in Struthers. She said the environment is good and the people are very friendly, but it can be overwhelming at times. Olivia works five hours a day and two to three days a week. Olivia said that having a job has affected her in a couple of ways. It has been stressful for her because when she gets home from school, she has to get ready right away and head to work. After work it is late and she barely has any time to do homework and feels exhausted.

They all agreed that having a job is a learning experience. Evan said that it teaches him a lot of responsibility and self worth. Olivia also said that working is teaching her a lot about having responsibility. Laila has learned how to save and manage her money better. Having a job as a student prepares for the future.
