Basketball is extremely competitive for some people. Athletes will do whatever it takes to gain a competitive advantage, even if it’s something as superstitious as wearing the same socks every game. Athletes need to make sure they are ready to perform at the highest level possible. All of this starts with a pregame ritual.
As many people know, the class of ‘23 is filled with many athletes for Lowellville. What everyone doesn’t know is what helps lead to their success individually and team-wise. After speaking with Senior Basketball players Frankie Lellio, Brady Bunofsky, and Anthony Lucente they all agreed part of their success is their pre-game rituals that they have done throughout their careers.
When asked if she has a ritual right before a game, Frankie Lellio [Senior] stated, “I always have to warm-up in a shirt besides my jersey or warm-up jersey.” She noted that she has done it for a while and it makes her feel comfortable and confident before a game.
When asked what superstition he has to prepare himself, Anthony Lucente [Senior] stated, “Before I get to the gym, home or away, I listen to certain artists' music. Future, Rod Wave, and Kendrick Lamar help me “lock in” and hopefully have a successful game.” Anthony also added that he wears a hoodie before every game because he said the ritual started when he was younger and carried on to high school.
Senior Brady Bunosky shared what he eats before a game. Bunosky said, “Whatever I had the night before is what I eat before the game. I also make sure to drink a Dr. Pepper [16oz] and a bag of Haribo Gummy Snakes.” Brady concluded the question by saying he feels best when he has a little sugar in him before the game. It makes him feel energized and ready to play.
Rituals help get athletes in a winning mindset and prepare them for the game.. There's many different ways to prepare before a game and it all comes down to what puts you in the right state physically, mentally, what prepares you for adversity, and what works best for you.
