Super Bowl LVII

One of the most known sporting events of all time, played once a year to determine the best team in the NFL, is the Super Bowl. Going on 57 years, this game is a tradition that dates back to 1967. Super Bowl LVII was on Sunday, February 12th at State Farm Stadium in Glendale in Arizona. Tickets for this event were expensive, with the average cost of one ticket being $7,542 this year. The last few Super Bowls have been different since Covid started. This is the first one that finally feels back to normal.

The 2023 Playoffs panned out exactly how most expected, the top seeds in each division punched a ticket to the Super Bowl. For the AFC the Kansas City Chiefs made it to the big game lead by Patrick Mahomes, Superbowl LIV MVP, and arguably the best quarterback at his age. In the NFC the Philadelphia Eagles are a team filled with grit and young talent which brought them to the Super Bowl. This matchup was an electric game with tons of offense and big plays! In the last ten seasons the Chiefs won 11 playoff games, including winning the 2019 Super Bowl. The Eagles on the other hand have made it to the playoffs six times in the last ten seasons, with six playoff wins as well as winning the 2017 Super Bowl.

The 2023 halftime show was getting a lot of hype before the game and it did not disappoint. Rihanna was the star of the Apple Music Halftime Show. She sang hit songs “Umbrella,” “Disturbia,” and “Work”.

Of course you can't forget about the legendary Superbowl commercials every year, this is one of the biggest days for commercials ever. My favorite had to be the Tubi “someone sat on the remote” commercial that scared many sports fans. Senior Classmate Averi Shaumaker has a in dept story about them that readers should check out.

The 2023 Super Bowl did not disappoint, it was a very good game that came down to the wire! Obviously I didn’t attend the game in person but you could hear the energy inside the stadium through the TV. Both teams came out firing, scoring on their opening drives and the offensive momentum kept going. The first quarter ended 7-7 with the Eagles’ ball. First play of the second quarter was a 45 yard touchdown Hurts to Brown Eagle go on top. Kansas City's defense takes charge with a 36 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, tie game. Philadelphia gets the ball back with 9:30 to half and drives all the way down the field for another touchdown putting them up 21-14 with 2 minutes in the half. The Eagles aren’t satisfied there and get another stop, and manage to get into field goal range, to set up Jake Elliot’s 35 yard kick with no time left on the clock. At the half the Eagles are up 24-14 feeling good about the lead, Andy Reed and the Chiefs know they need to step up their game if they want a chance to win.

The Chiefs must love Rihanna because they came out of the half pumped up, with a one yard touchdown run by Isaiah Pacheco to bring the game within three, at 24-21 Eagles. With a slow 3rd quarter for the Eagles they still managed to get another Jake Elliot field goal (33 yards). By the end of the 3rd the score was 27-21 Eagles in the lead, and we got ourselves a good game brewing. The Chiefs got a quick score to start the 4th with the energy turning to their side and they didn’t slow down. They get a stop on defense and score again, putting them up 35-27 with 9:22 to go! The next possession for the Eagles they put together a great drive leading to a touchdown to tie it up. The Chiefs get the ball back and start driving, but with two minutes on the clock in a crucial third down, if they get the first down the game is pretty much over. They snap the ball Mahomes looks to Juju on an out and up… ball overthrown, but there’s a flag, pass interference on the defense. A very controversial and game changing call, but the Chiefs get the automatic first down, which set up Harrison Butker for the game winning 27 yard field goal.

The Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in four seasons and Patrick Mahomes is a two time Superbowl MVP. This was a Super Bowl game that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs!
