The Lowellville girls’ basketball team just finished regular season and after 22 games into season as of February 10, 2023, they have a current record of 9-13, which they hope to improve on moving forward into the end of the season. The girls are coached by head coach, Lisa Modelski and assistant coaches Ron Rotunno and John Paul Hvisdak. The coaches have done a great job at practice with the girls by making sure their shots are more consistent and coaching them to be a more defensive threat to their opponents. With the girls being as athletic as they are, they have tough teams to face along the road. Teams like Waterloo, Springfield, Crestview, and Western Reserve are some of the teams that the girls will have to prepare hard for. None of their wins come easy, their hard work shows when they get out on the floor and give their opponents everything they have.
Senior varsity starter, Frankie Lellio, has been a starter for 4 years of high school and she has a lot of faith and determination in herself and the team’s ability to go far. “We just need to communicate better and just work on shooting because we are not very tall, we can’t get in the paint like other teams can, so we just need to hit those outside shots.” Frankie talked about what they need to improve on, but she also mentioned strengths that this team has to help with their success. “I think ball movement and we just have a good team bonding and chemistry that makes us play well together.” She believes with the right adjustments and an improvement on defense, they can have a fair chance at districts and more success to come.
Varsity head coach, Lisa Modelski, has an extremely important role on this team. Coach Modelski has been the head coach for the girls for 7 years now. Coach Modelski has had goals every year yet no matter what, she does her job at getting her girls to do everything they can to be the best. “We have always worked on fundamentals and game preparation,” states Coach Modelski. “Three of our varsity starters are 4 year starters so we continue to rely on their experience and leadership in games.” Coach Modelski stresses the importance of that experience and communication moving forward. “The MVAC is a strong league with teams like Springfield and Waterloo, and we need to play almost perfect games to contend with them,” she states. She also adds, “in order to be prepared for tournament play, we need to continue to get better on our defense in both the full and half court games and continue to find ways to score.” We would like to wish the Varsity Girls basketball team the best of luck in the rest of their season!
