Galentine’s Day

You’ve all probably heard of Valentine's Day, but have you ever heard of Galentine's Day? Galentine's Day is a day where friends celebrate love and friendship whether or not they’re in a relationship. Galentine's Day was first celebrated in 2010. This idea came from the show Parks and Recreations during an episode when one character named Leslie Knope starts her own holiday. The character in the show made up a day called “Galentine's Day” which she celebrated with her girlfriends. Ever since people have started to actually celebrate this day in real life. Now people celebrate it on February 13th every year with a few small differences compared to the show. Galentine’s was originally based on the idea that it was for your girlfriends which is where they get the gal part from the name. Even though it is called Galentine's Day and started off as being a day you would celebrate for your girlfriends, anyone can celebrate it with guy and girl friends.

Galentine's Day does not have any specific traditions or rules to follow since it's so new. That's the fun thing about it, you can just do things you want in your own way. Galentine's Day colors are red and pink since this day still symbolizes love. Friends can go out to eat, try a new restaurant, or go to your favorite hang out. Another thing you can do is have a party at your house and celebrate together. . If having a party is not for you, do fun things you and your friends all enjoy such as having a movie night, sleepovers, spa trips, or ice skating. Some movies to watch on Galentine's Day are Mean Girls, or Clueless. . A fun spa day at home with friends can include manicures and facials. Baking cookies, cakes, and brownies with friends is also fun.

Sidney Price shared how she celebrates her Galentines ” I celebrated this day with my mom instead of my friends, we would also decorate the house with little heart streamers and hearts around the house, then we would cook dinner or go out for dinner, after we got done eating we would sit at home and watch the hallmark Valentines movies and eat chocolate and ice cream.”

Brooke Ginnis described how she celebrates Galentine’s. “My mom, grandmas, and I will go out for brunch at Selah in Struthers, then after we all take pictures together. Once we take pictures we will go and have dessert.” This holiday is great for everyone because even if you don't have a significant other you can still celebrate this.
