Golden Globes 2023: Highlights from the Big Night

It is officially award show season, and everyone can’t stop talking about this year's Golden Globes. On January 10, 2023, actors, directors and celebrities came together to celebrate their work this year and accept their awards. The competition was stiff this year with categories filled with amazing performers. If you missed watching the big event, here are some highlights from this year’s Golden Globes!


Best Picture, Drama: The Fabelmans

Steven Speilberg’s film, The Fabelmans won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Drama. The Fabelmans is a story about a young boy named Sammy, who falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see movies at a young age. Feeling inspired, Sammy starts to make his own films at a young age, and as he grows older, he has a dream of becoming a director. This film was against many other popular films such as Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Tár, and Top Gun: Maverick.


Best Director: Steven Speilberg

Iconic director, Steven Speilberg took home the award for Best Director for his newest film, The Fabelmans. Speilberg has directed many popular films such as Jaws, E.T The Extra Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. In his category, Speilberg was against James Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, and Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisheer. This was Spielberg's fourteenth nomination and ninth win.


Best Actress, Drama: Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett won best actress in a drama for her film Tár. She beat some stiff competition in her category such as Viola Davis in The Woman King, Ana de Armas in Blonde, Michelle Williams in The Fablemans, and Olivia Coleman in Empire of Light. This is Blanchett’s 4th win and 12th nomination, but unfortunately she was unable to attend the event this year. Actor Henry Golding accepted the award on her behalf.


Best Actor, Drama: Austin Butler

Austin Butler won best actor in a drama for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the film Elvis. Butler was up against Brendan Fraser in The Whale, Hugh Jackman in The Son, Bill Nighy in Living, and Jeremy Pope in The Inspection. This is Butler’s first win and first nomination.


Best Supporting Actress: Angela Bassett

Angela Bassett took home the title of Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Bassett made history with this win, being the first actor to earn a major award for a Marvel movie. Bassett’s competition consisted of Kerry Condon in The Banshees of Inisheer, Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Dolly de Leon in Triangle of Sadness, and Carey Mulligan in She said. This was Angela Bassett’s second win and second nomination.


Best Drama Series: House of the Dragon

Game of Thrones’ long awaited spin off, House of the Dragon,based on the history of the House Targaryen, won Best Drama Series. This category was full of stiff competition with the shows, Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, and Severance.


Best Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie: The White Lotus

Hulu television show, The White Lotus won Best Limited or Anthology Series or TV. Movie. This show follows the guests and employees of the White Lotus resort chain, whose stays are affected by their various psychosocial dysfunctions. The White Lotus took home the Globe against Black Bird, Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Pam & Tommy, and The Dropout.


Best Actress in a Drama Series: Zendaya

Zendaya won best actress in a drama series for her role as Rue Bennet in the hit TV show, Euphoria. In this category, Zendaya was against Emma D’Arcy in House of the Dragon, Laura Linney in Ozark, Imelda Staunton in The Crown, and Hilary Swank in Alaska Daily. Although she had stiff competition, it came as no surprise that the 26 year old actress took home the Golden Globe. Sadly she could not be there to accept her award, but gave her speech later in the evening. This was Zendaya’s first win and first nomination.


Best Actor in a Drama Series: Kevin Costner, Yellowstone

Kevin Costner won Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role of John Dutton in the hit TV show Yellowstone. He won his category against actors such as Jeff Bridges in The Old Man, Diego Luna in Andor, Bob Odenkirk in Better Call Saul, and Adam Scott in Severance.


Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie: Jennifer Coolidge

Fan favorite, Jennifer Coolidge won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie, for her role as Tanya McQuoid in The White Lotus. Coolidge was a nominee in this category alongside Clair Danes in Fleishman Is in Trouble, Daisy Edgar-Jones in Under the Banner of Heaven, Niecy Nash-Betts in Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and Aubrey Plaza in The White Lotus. This was Jennifer Cooldige’s second nomination and first win.


Carol Burnett Award: Ryan Murphy

Fantastic director, Ryan Murphy had the honor of accepting the Carol Burnett TV Achievement award. This award was created to honor film makers and stars and was created in 2018. Ryan Murphy has created one iconic show after another, directing shows such as American Horror Story, Glee, Ratched, American Crime Story, Scream Queens, and Pose. In his speech, Murphy honored all of the LGBTQ kids in America, sharing his childhood stories and talking about how hard it is to be a kid in the LGBTQ community. He also gave thanks to the many people who have helped him throughout his career such as the stars of his hit shows, Billy Porter, Sarah Paulson, Leslie Grossman, and many more. Murphy has had sixteen Golden Globe nominations and five wins.
