Head Coach Matt Olson’s 100th win as the Lowellville Boys Basketball Head Coach

Matt Olson has made a fantastic milestone with his 100th win as the Lowellville basketball head coach beating mineral ridge in blowout fashion 68-41. After interviewing Mr. Olson and Senior player Anthony Lucente, I received a lot of insight on all the hard work, determination, time and effort that goes into coaching an intense sport like basketball. From my interview with Anthony Lucente I understand that Coach Olson taught them a lot about the game. Lucente said, “He takes pressure off of their backs as the game goes on.”

The following question was asked to Anthony Lucente, what is one thing that you will remember about Coach Olson? He said he will always remember how hard Coach Olson worked and Coach Olson said he will remember developing positive relationships with the players by putting the work in before games. Anthony Lucente also said that he has gained a lot of basketball knowledge from Coach Olson. Lucente said, “He tells us to play as a team and to not think too much. I love the way he gets us prepared for the season.” This just shows how much Coach Olson cares about the players and how much he wants to see them succeed in the game of basketball and in life.

A good influence can go a long way. Coach Olson looks to improve more upon himself by gaining a lot of experience with coaching and said himself that the head basketball coach when he was playing had a big impact on him and how he coaches. He knows a lot about life and basketball with how well he gets his players and himself prepared for a long season by working on tiniest details they need to improve on and you can see that just by the way the leaders and the underclassmen carry themselves on the team and how mentally focused they look while competing against the best. Coach Olson also wanted to honor his late head basketball coach who just passed away. Coach Richard Williams was the head basketball coach for Lowellville High School from 1957-1995. He was born on October 19, 1930 and passed away Jan 4th, 2023.
