After many conversations about Lowellville needing an indoor track program it is finally official. Lowellville’s official indoor track program will be led by Coach Eric Grow. After speaking with Coach Grow, he expressed how he was very excited to be able to coach indoor track, especially since he believes some of the players have what it takes to compete at the indoor state track meet. When asked what he hopes to accomplish, Coach Grow expressed, “the main goal is to get everyone in shape and improve individually as a team. Going to state would be awesome but that is not the main goal.” Grow also explained that he understands coaching indoor/outdoor track is very different, mainly the communication aspect. He stated, “communication is the biggest challenge I will have to face this year. As well as having to work with athletes doing multiple sports because they won’t be able to be at every practice.” He noted that he just hopes that athletes are able to come whenever they can and are ready to work and get better.
When it comes to Lowellville distance’s runners many key names stand out. Lowellville senior Nathan Minnie, is just one of several seniors on the team who are looking forward to this year's indoor track season. Nathan expressed, “besides it being my senior year, being able to run competitively and against different people will be something I am looking forward to most. I feel like it will help myself out and the team when it comes to outdoor track season.” Nathan also explained how getting in shape will be a strong task for the team to overcome, but he believes that everyone will be able to make it through.
Another star track runner is Lowellville’s very own, junior Sophia Yon. Sophia expressed excitement when she heard about Lowellville having an official indoor track program. Sophia stated, “It makes me happy knowing it will bring more attention to the sport and gives the people who have been running by themselves a team to be with.” She also noted that she believes this year's indoor track program will give athletes plenty of opportunities to break personal records (pr’s) and have a successful track season. She expressed, “It [Indoor Track] helps so that you are conditioned for outdoor track already. You don’t have to spend the first half of your outdoor track season getting in shape.” Sophia believes that having an indoor track season will have nothing but benefits for track runners this season.
Lowellville boys 800m, 4X800m, and 4X400m runner, junior Mathew Lucido, also believes that indoor track will be a success for athletes running track. Mathew is one of multiple indoor track runners who will participate in another sport [basketball] while participating in indoor track. When asked if it would be a struggle for him to handle both sports Mathew stated, “Meets are on Saturdays and basketball is on Tuesdays and Fridays. I won’t be able to make it to all track practices but I believe I will be able to handle everything just fine.” Mathew said he was interested in indoor track because there will be no outside effects like weather or having to sit around and wait for between events. He explained the differences between outside track and indoor track , but explained he’s ready for it. Mathew expressed, “besides the obvious, what makes indoor different from outdoor for our team is the goal of just trying to get better individually rather than winning the meet. Outdoor track is when we try to go to state and win meets. Indoor is where we get in shape and work on form."
Many members of the Rocket Indoor Track Team seem very intrigued and ready for the season to begin. Meets are held every Saturday during the months of January and February at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (YSU). Goodluck to Coach Grow and all the athletes for this upcoming Outdoor/Indoor track season!
