Top 5 Trades in NFL History According To Anthony Vrabel

The NFL has just completed another spectacular season and now the offseason is upon us. There have been some crazy happenings in the NFL regular season and offseason on and off the field. For example, this year AJ Brown was traded to the Eagles and last season Matthew Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams and won a Super Bowl. Let’s take a look at some of the best trades in NFL history and my top five favorite NFL trades!

Number five starts out with the Deshaun Watson trade, and not because of the caliber of the player, but because of how hefty the contract was. In the 2022 offseason, the Houston Texans gave permission to Watson to seek a trade. According to Spotrac NFL Player Section, Watson fully guaranteed a contract of a whopping $230 million over 5 years when signed by the Cleveland Browns. This contract ended up being the most expensive guaranteed contract in NFL history.

My number four best trade is Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions to the LA Rams. Before this trade Stafford never won a NFL playoff game, even with the talent around him; however, as soon as he was traded to the LA Rams in 2021 he won a Super Bowl. This shows how much a change of cultures and coaches can affect an athlete.

For my number three spot on the list, I chose the trade involving Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers to the Las Vegas Raiders. In last year's offseason Aaron Rodgers’ favorite wide receiver, Davante Adams, was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. This was huge for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers because he loved working with Adams. This was also a big deal for Raiders quarterback Derek Carr who played with Adams at Fresno State University. Additionally, Adams and Carr worked together in the offseason, so it seemed like Carr and Adams had a deeper relationship than Rodgers and Adams. This trade made sense from the get go, and Adams definitely thrived throughout the season; however, the team only went 6-11. The Raiders are expected to trade Carr as soon as they are able.

My second choice is Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs. In last year's offseason one of the top weapons in the league was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Miami Dolphins. Tyreek Hill was the number two option in the Chiefs offense after Travis Kelce. It is believed that Tyreek Hill was looking to make more money, so both teams decided that the best option was a trade. After Hill was traded to the Dolphins he signed a four year contract with $72 million guaranteed. He made the Dolphins a force to be reckoned with during the 2022 season, but a couple of injuries at the quarterback position held them back. Hill was a top three receiver in the NFL last season.

My number one choice for the best and most important trade is not a player, but a pick in the draft. The Chiefs traded the Buffalo Bills the No. 27, a 2018 first rounder, and the No. 97 picks to move up to the No.10 spot in the draft. They traded up to gain Patrick Mahomes, a 6 '2, 225 Lb quarterback from the University of Texas Tech. This trade ended up being a life changing decision for the Chiefs franchise. In his second season, Patrick Mahomes won an MVP and brought them to the AFC Championship. He already has two Super Bowls in his six seasons of playing and is on pace to becoming the GOAT of the NFL.

These trades can be franchise changing or even life changing for anyone involved with the team and the player being traded. Anything is possible when it comes to the NFL and some of the trades that we see make this clear. Trades are huge decisions that are made by coaches

and players alike, sometimes they pan out, sometimes they don’t but in the end a trade will often have a huge impact on a team. I think these are the greatest trades in NFL history.
