The Arctic Monkeys are an indie rock/post punk revival band from Sheffield, England. The band began in 2002 as an instrumental group. The members consist of: lead singer and guitarist Alex Turner, rhythm guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer and backup vocalist Matt Helders, and Nick O’Malley on the bass guitar. According to Absolute Radio “The band’s first ever gig in 2003 was at a pub in Sheffield City Centre called The Grapes.” Their first single was “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor” in 2005.
The band began rising to fame on MySpace, a social media platform that teens would use from 2005 to 2008, as well as by passing out CDs at some of their performances. They now have seven studio albums including: Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not, Favorite Worst Nightmare, Humbug, Suck It and See, AM, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, and their newest album released in 2022, The Car. The most popular album according to Far Out Magazine is, Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not, released in 2006.
According to students at Lowellville High School, “505” is the best song the Arctic Monkeys have put out. With the runner ups being "I Wanna Be Yours” and "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High.” Students Madison Esposito and Shannyn Phillips agree with the winner of the poll. They think it is a really good song and the dramatic build up in the middle of the song really brings out the instrumentals and gives the song more “texture”.
The song title “505” is the number of the hotel room that the lead singer Alex Turner's girlfriend was staying at. He has admitted this song was the first actual love song he has written. According to Song Facts, “The song returned to the UK singles chart in October 2022 after enjoying viral success on TikTok. It beat its 2007 peak of #74 on the tally”.
While students may like the hit song “505” the best, “A Certain Romance” is ultimately the most popular. According to The Guardian, the top three most popular songs by the Arctic Monkeys are “A Certain Romance" at number one, “Do I Wanna Know" at number two, and “505” at number three. According to Far Out Magazine the song "A Certain Romance” is about experiencing the “lust and glory” that comes with being young and on top of the world.
