On February 24, 2023 Peyton Parrish released his album of Disney Metal/Rock covers entitled, The Most Magical Album On Earth. Peyton Parrish overall has some of the coolest music I have by far heard. Parrish was born in Washington, DC on November 3, 1996. The amount of effort put into this album can be heard in each of the songs. The album features different Disney classics from movies such as The Lion King, Mulan, Pocahontas, and Pirates of the Caribbean. The album has 15 songs overall.
I’ll Make a Man Out of You
The first song in the album is called “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” This song originally is from the movie Mulan. In this song they train for an oncoming battle where they will fight the Huns. I enjoy this song because the drums have almost a war march snare sound to them at the start then go into a typical rock/metal sounding drum.
Colors of the Wind
The second song in this album is named “Colors of the Wind.” This song is from the movie Pocahontas. In this song the message seems to almost be to save the Earth or protect it. I enjoy this song because it has rather a symphonic and orchestral sound in it at some points. This makes the song seem magical or make it even seem like the forest is in the background with a river streaming through it.
Let It Go
The third song in this album is named “Let It Go.” This song originates from the movie Frozen. I like how this song at different times sounds almost as if it’s about to build up to intensity, then everything but Peyton Parrish singing cuts off, then the rest of the instruments come in. This song takes an original Disney princess song and gives it a new heavier, darker intensity that is not present in the original.
Can You Feel the Love Tonight
The next song on the album is called “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” This song was originally sung by Elton John for The Lion King. In the original, Timon and Pumbaa speak about love as Simba and Nala fall in love with each other. This song becomes a classic rock ballad with powerful drum beats, electric guitars, and a powerful vocal.
Son of Man
Coming up next is the song called “Son of Man.” This song originated from the movie Tarzan. I like this song because it is rather motivational. It almost sounds like something you would adventure through a vast jungle to. I enjoy the vocals on this song as they have a rather good range and the drums have a rather catchy sound to them.
Go The Distance
The sixth song from this album is called “Go The Distance.” This rather well known song is from the movie Hercules. In the original scene, Hercules seems to be attempting to go the distance and eventually after being told by his parents what his true backstory is. He then goes the distance and goes every mile to where he feels he truly belongs. Eventually, finding the heroes welcome he searches for. I like this song because it feels motivating to search for bigger things or even go on an adventure even if it takes many miles. Here Parrish takes the song and really strips it down to his voice and a piano creating a beautiful ballad.
Hoist the Colours
The seventh song in this album is called “Hoist the Colours.” This song is originally from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. In the original scene, pirates are going to be hung from the gallows. This song in this scene is used as a call to arms at the Brethren Court, basically saying to raise the pirate flags high and let the colors shine. This is one of my favorite songs on this album. Parrish keeps the intensity of a pirate song with an eerie menacing mood that fits the theme perfectly.
Speechless
The next song in the album is called “Speechless.” This song originates from the movie Aladdin. This song is in the live action version but not the animated version. This song is about Princess Jasmine being tired of being hushed or forced to be speechless because of Jafar and the Sultan. Here Parrish creates a rebellious anthem, a voice to be heard, one that will not be silenced. This song is a powerful rock song.
A Whole New World
The first and only song in this album to feature a different singer other than Peyton Perrish, Kayla King sings “A Whole New World.” This song comes from the movie Aladdin. This song is about Aladdin and Princess Jasmine on a magic carpet ride above the world. In this song Aladdin disguised himself as a prince. I like this song because Peyton Parrish and Kayla King’s vocals fit well together and create the perfect ballad love song.
Be Prepared
The tenth song on the album is “Be Prepared,” which originates from The Lion King. I think this song is the perfect cover because it has the most villain-like sound. Parrish uses the Hyenas voices on top of Scar’s. In the movie, Scar is singing about killing Mufasa and Simba to become king. As he signs the song, he is attempting to get the Hyenas to help him achieve this goal and essentially tricks them to get their help.
Loyal Brave True
Coming in at number eleven in the song is “Loyal Brave True” from Mulan. This song represents the difference between being vulnerable and being strong or having strength. In this song Mulan is questioning if she is a true warrior. Parrish uses the guitar to create an almost battle-like sound in the song and includes melodies that represent traditional Japanese music.
You’ll Be In My Heart
The next song in the album is called “You’ll Be In My Heart.” This song originated from the movie Tarzan. In the original song, it seems that Tarzan’s mother in the jungle who is a gorilla starts the song singing about how he will always be in her heart. As if to comfort the crying child. I like this song because the guitar and drums make an amazing sound when paired up together here. The vocals ring out and have a different variety of ranges making the song powerful.
The Lion Sleeps Tonight
“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is from the movie The Lion King. In the original movie, Timon, Pumaa and Rafiki sing this song. They sing it because they are walking through the jungle. Peyton Parrish gives a twist in this song as it adds unique sounding vocals without changing the song at all. I like how the drums sound more temple or jungle in the beginning of the song and grow in intensity throughout the song.
Reflection
“Reflection” is from the movie Mulan. In this song, Mulan wants to show who she truly is but is afraid that if she does so her family will be ashamed of her. I enjoy this song because it is a slow ballad in the beginning and . then it starts to build up by adding the guitars.
Go The Distance (Reimagined)
The final song in this album is called “Go The Distance (Reimagined.)” This song has a lovely somber and slow sound on the piano. The vocals lined up with the piano are absolutely amazing. I like how in some parts there is a suspended cymbal which sounds absolutely amazing. I also like the variety of percussion or strings you can hear in the background at different points which somewhat helps build the song.
Overall, this is by far one of my all time favorite albums. From the wide range of instruments in some of the songs to the sound of the vocals, Peyton Parrish has made one of the most beautiful Disney cover albums out there, while providing a unique sound on classic Disney songs which really has made this a memorable album.
