Handel’s: The Best Ice Cream in Town

In the summer of 1945, a woman named Alice Handel created a mouthwatering legacy in the town of Youngstown, Ohio known as Handel’s. Alice used fresh fruit from her garden and her personal recipes to create her very own ice cream that soon became a town favorite. To this day, the few Handel’s shops we have, still live up to the traditions Alice made, such as making fresh batches of ice cream everyday and by using her original recipes and methods. Handel’s is definitely one of the most popular ice cream shops around here.

Handel’s has many different flavors and options for you to try. Kayla Taylor and Dalilah Hahn decided to try a few different flavors and rate them. We chose to review six flavors that are popular Handel’s favorites. We were excited to try Cotton Candy, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Graham Central Station, Peppermint Stick, Strawberry Cheesecake Chunk, and Red Skies At Night. The most popular flavor among the students was Cotton Candy so we decided to try that one first.

We rated the flavor Cotton Candy pretty high with an 8/10. We loved how perfectly sweet and creamy the ice cream was. The chocolate chips in the ice cream advanced the flavor and they loved how with every bite it has a little bit of a sweeter flavor.

The second ice cream flavor that we tried was Graham Central Station. We gave this flavor a low rating, with Kayla rating it a 0/10 and Dalilah rating it a 2/10. We thought it was too sweet and the graham cracker pieces were mushy and had a weird consistency. After trying this flavor, we had to take a break before trying other flavors because the sweetness made us feel sick.

The next flavor that we tried was Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. We rated it a 5/10 because it tasted like vanilla ice cream with chunks of chocolate. The cookie dough pieces were very small which made the flavor very hard to taste. We think that if Handel’s added more cookie dough into their recipe, it would be more of a true cookie dough ice cream.

The flavor that we decided to try next was Strawberry Cheesecake Chunk. We had very different ratings on this flavor. Kayla rated it a 2/10, whereas Dalilah rated it a 10/10. Kayla felt that the ice cream was just bland and that the strawberry puree was not helping give it flavor, she did not like the cheesecake chunks throughout it because of how chewy they were. Dalilah absolutely loved the cheesecake chunks and her favorite part of the ice cream was the strawberry puree.

We then tried the Peppermint Stick ice cream, we both rated this one a 5/10. We loved the cooling sensation of the ice cream and how it kept it’s taste with every bite. We thought it reminded them of toothpaste too much, so we would not recommend this flavor.

The final flavor we tried was Red Skies At Night. We both rated this flavor an 8/10. We both loved the chocolate throughout the ice cream and how flavorful the ice cream was. We would love to order this flavor again and really recommend it.
