The Best Sports Movies Of All Time

Football: The Waterboy

Baseball: The Sandlot

Combat: Rocky

Basketball: Space-Jam

Sports are such an important part of many students’ lives here at Lowellville High School. I thought it would be fun to ask students what their favorite sports movies were. With so many good movies to choose from, it took weeks of polls before gaining the final results of students’ favorite sports movies in the following categories: football, baseball, combat, and basketball.

The Waterboy is a great movie filled with some good laughs. The movie is about a character Robert “Bobby” Boucher Jr. who sets out on his journey to find a new job as a waterboy at the college level of football. Bobby only cares about hydrating the players for the team. His water is the freshest in the state of Louisiana. Characters in this movie were very neatly picked and you could tell by the way they acted in their specific roles. Here is a list of main actors and who they played: Bobby Boucher, played by Adam Sandler. Vicki Vallencourt, played by Fairuza Balk. Coach Klein, played by Henry Winkler. Helen “Mama” Boucher, played by Kathy Bates. Derek Wallace, played by Lawrence Gilliard Jr. This movie has many moments that we will always remember when thinking about it like when they were all in the locker room at halftime going over their favorite memories of Bobby being on the team.

The Sandlot is not my favorite baseball movie, but it is up there, and it was by far Lowellville students’ favorite baseball movie. The movie is about a kid named Scott Smalls who finds a new group of friends who play baseball. They play baseball on a dusty field with no grass. The fence next to the baseball diamond has a dog in the backyard that terrifies the boys. Things take a sudden turn when Smalls brings his dad’s Babe Ruth signed baseball to the baseball field. He hit the baseball into the dog guarded backyard. One of his friends, Benjamin, puts his new sneakers on to go get the baseball and succeeds. When they get to the front door of the mysterious neighbors house they find out that the owner of the dog played with Babe Ruth. They all go home and Smalls finally learns how to play catch with his dad. The main actors and actresses are as follows David Mickey Evans as Smalls, Mike Vitar as Benjamin, Patrick Renna as Hamilton “Ham” Porter, and James Earle Jones as Mertle.

Rocky is a classic from the late 70’s. This movie is about a poor, down on his luck, boxer Rocky Balboa from Philadelphia, who is chosen to take on another boxer, Apollo Creed, the World Heavyweight Champion. The characters in this movie are Salvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed, Tailia Shire as Adrian Pennino, and Burt Young as Paulie Pennino.

Space-Jam, according to the students, is apparently the best basketball movie of all time. This movie is about Michael Jordan going into Looney Toons to defeat the Monstars who are trying to destroy the planet. At the end Michael Jordan defeats them with a last minute dunk at the buzzer to win the game. The cast of this movie is Michael Jordan as himself, Bill Murray as himself, Patrick Ewing as himself, Larry Bird as himself, Danny Devito as Swackhammer, Larry Johnson as himself, Chuck Barkley as himself, and Muggsy Bogues.

These are just four great sports movies. I recommend that you check them out if you haven’t seen them, especially since each of these is a classic. They have some great acting, funny lines, and good stories.
