Boys Varsity Basketball

The Rockets had an amazing basketball season with an overall record of 21-3 going undefeated in the league. This is the first time that Lowellville has won the league outright since 1975. They’re head coached by Matt Olson, assisted by Nicky Ballone, Spiro Schialdone, Mike Minnie and Steve Hunt. They had a senior loaded team with a total of 8. The seniors were Vinny Ballone, Brady Bunofsky, Mark Dubos, Ryan Hvisdak, Kevin Johnson, Anthony Lucente, Alex Modelski, Ricky Palumbo.

The Rockets finished off the regular season with a record of 20-2; their only losses were to South Range (51-47) and JFK (75-74). The last game of the regular season was the WKBN game of the week against East. East was a good opponent who had good athletes but our boys had no problem as they breezed by them with a win 65-26.

As they prepared for the tournament with a super district they knew it would be tough to get through the bracket. With a bye in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs, the Rockets played Lake Center at home for the sectional championship scoring with a last second shot to win 43-41. The Rockets next game was against Dalton at the Struthers Field House. The Rockets began with a 7 point lead but Dalton would go on a run before halftime and make the score 23-22 Dalton. Unfortunately, the Rockets, who never quit, came up short in the district championship with a final score of 55-36. Overall, the Rockets had an amazing season and will always be remembered for their brilliant effort and determination to be the best they could be.
