For the first time in Lowellville basketball history, the Junior Varsity boys basketball team had a perfect season. Coming off of a 16-4 record in the 2021-2022 season, the JV boys team were expecting big things. With many returning players, new freshmen and a returning coach Nick Ballone, the JV boys were destined for a great season. Last year the team only had four losses, losing twice to the Springfield Tigers, once to the Warren JFK Eagles, and once to the Campbell Red Devils. They came back this year looking for revenge, they easily took down all three of these teams, going on to win the MVAC Championship. In the final game of the season, against the East Golden Bears, with a perfect season on the line, the game went into overtime. It was a back and forth game, the crowd was completely packed for senior night, and the energy was electric. With a great team effort the Rockets took down the Golden Bears and ended their season with a record of 22-0, making history.
When you’re playing as well as the JV Boys did, it’s easy to get a big ego and feel like you’re untouchable. When asked how to stay humble and focused each game, star player Braylen Dabney said, “We went into every game as if we were 0-0, as if we were just trying to get a win. We weren’t really focused on our record, we were just trying to play our best.”
Every player dreams of having a perfect season; it’s the ultimate accomplishment for a team. Dabney said, “It feels great, we worked hard and practiced and we knew this could be the end result if we played as a team.” This team was special, they had great chemistry and it was a great experience for the boys to share this experience with each other. It was a season everyone will remember forever. Congratulations to the Rockets on a historic season!
