National Honor Society, also known as NHS, is a nationwide organization that recognizes student achievement. On Friday, April 21st Lowellville High School inducted their newest members: Michael Ballone, Michael Gibson, Brooke Ginnis, Casey Gordon, Michael Katula, Mathew Lucido, Jayden Mamula, Ryan Neider, Natalie Parry, Shannyn Phillips, Fortunato Rivera-Ocasio, Isabella Willrich, and Sophia Yon.
After speaking to NHS advisor Jeannine Reamer, she told me some of the values that should be embraced and represented with NHS. Mrs. Reamer has been involved with Lowellville High School’s NHS program since 2017. She chose to become the advisor for this organization because she enjoys working with the upperclassmen to conduct community service projects. Mrs. Reamer makes sure to uphold the expectations of this organization by hosting drives and other activities throughout the school year to help members of our local community, and teach the importance of this to the members. The Second Harvest Food Bank Food Drive is one of Mrs. Reamer’s favorite service projects She loves it because it is their first service project of the year and one of their largest.
Mrs. Reamer touched on the importance of representing character, service, leadership, and scholarship in the members' everyday lives. Her advice for prospective NHS members is, “Always remember that NHS has four components, and all four are equally as important.” Qualifications for NHS are having respect and positive attributes, leadership skills, and providing 30 hours of community service in various ways such as tutoring or volunteering at local charities. Congratulations to all of the newly inducted members and their families!
