How The True Irish Celebrate St. Patrick’s

There are so many interesting views about St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and the reasons behind them. Some people don’t celebrate at all, but for the Irish it is a very special day. St. Patrick’s Day is an important day that Irish people celebrate where they came from and their ancestors. This is the day people observe the death of the patron saint of Ireland. They celebrate with traditional dances, parades, and bagpipe players. The three main colors for this holiday are green, orange, and white, which are the colors of the Irish national flag. There are tons of memorabilia sold for St. Patrick’s Day. There are also many different sayings and images that are commonly put on the holiday’s festive decorations. Some of which are: “Luck of the Irish,” “kiss me, I’m Irish,” or “Happy St. Patty’s Day,” and not to mention the traditional four leaf clover, which the Irish proudly wear on March 17th every year.

Many Irish families celebrate the day by making traditional Irish meals and having a few alcoholic beverages. These traditional meals include: potato cabbage stew, shepherd's pie, potato pancakes, reuben sandwiches, glazed carrots and parsnips, or boiled bacon and cabbage. A traditional Irish breakfast typically includes all or some of the following foods: leftover potatoes, grilled tomatoes, fried eggs, pork sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, white and black pudding, and rashers. The Irish ancestors had many different takes of our modern day desserts. They made ginger cookies, many different pound cakes, butter cakes, soda bread cookies, and different types of sweet breads.

People also like to celebrate the foods and culture with big parades. One of the largest parades and celebrations takes place in Chicago every year. This year they kicked off the festivities on Saturday, March 11 as they dyed the Chicago River bright green. Chicago has been having these celebrations for more than 175 years. The Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band performs in the parade along with many colorful floats, Irish step dancers, marching bands, bagpipers, and the city’s Irish band. This is a three hour long event with celebrations following the parade. There is also a local parade in Boardman with floats and music while people dress up in the three main colors of the Irish flag being green, white, and orange.
