The Shamrock Shake is a green colored beverage with a mint flavor. This is a seasonal drink sold at McDonald’s between the end of February and during the month of March for the celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Many see the Shamrock Shake as just a milkshake but it also can be made into a smoothie or frappe as well. The creation of this delicious shake began when Connecticut's McDonald's owner, Harold Rosen introduced the shake in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. McDonald's story is that the Shamrock Shake dates all the way back to 1966 although not all stores sold them until the year of 2012. According to Tanya Pai’s article, “How The McDonald’s Shamrock Shake Has Endured for 50 Years,” more than 60 million Shamrock Shakes have been sold which is pretty crazy since they are only sold for a limited time throughout the year.
While there have been multiple changes over the years, the original version has been the fan favorite of this beverage. Initially, the shake was a lemon/lime flavor made with vanilla ice cream as well as vanilla syrup. This shake is now typically made of McDonald’s soft serve vanilla ice cream where they add a hint of mint flavor and green food coloring, topped with whipped cream and a cherry on top though that may vary depending on the location. The price can change contingent on the area you purchase from. Many locations charge $5 for the largest size and down to around $3 to $4 for the smaller sizes. The Shamrock Shake is the most well known milkshake for St. Patrick's Day, but McDonald’s isn’t the only place that has created a signature drink for this holiday. Dairy Queen is releasing a new under the rainbow shake this year in honor of Saint Patrick's Day. This shake is a blend of strawberry flavored syrup, vanilla soft serve ice cream, and is garnished with whipped topping and rainbow sprinkles. In February of last year, Dunkin announced that they will be dropping the new Shamrock Macchiato during March of 2022, which is smooth espresso with an Irish cream flavor, a sweet cream and vanilla flavor, which attempts to capture the flavor profile of Irish whiskey. Although multiple places have a St. Patrick's Day related treat, McDonald’s continues to have the most popular dessert for this day.
