Vacations: Why Are They Necessary?

With spring break quickly approaching there are millions of people planning their summer and springtime getaways. Vacations can be wanted by many, but usually are a need for most. Most adults work jobs that can be time consuming or take a lot of focus and responsibility. When adults are at work it also gives them less time to focus on their children and their home lives. Many studies mention the leading causes of stress are jobs and it has progressively been getting worse over the past few decades. People may have different ways of decreasing levels of stress and anxiety, but one big way of releasing some of that stress is a break.Vacations not only remove a good amount of stress, it also provides many other health benefits. One big benefit of vacation is it improves mental motivation: “Studies have found that chronic stress can make it difficult to achieve certain tasks and cause memory problems. Taking time off can be like getting a tune-up for the brain, improving your mental health and cognition” (Isham). When time is taken off from work it helps the brain recover quicker and helps it clear up and gain more knowledge when work is off of the mind.

When a family returns from vacation they become more focused and overall more productive. With stress being an important reason vacations are necessary, every family can use a little more time together. Yes, there may be many people who go on vacation alone, however, it is always good to improve the relationship with your family. “Importance of taking a vacation” states, “Spending time enjoying life with loved ones can keep relationships strong. A study by the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services found that women who took vacations were more satisfied with their marriages” (Isham). Family should never be an issue, but everything that goes on in a single family member’s life can seriously affect the entire family's chemistry. Sometime’s families tend to fall out of the groove of spending quality time together when work and education get in the way. This is one of the biggest reasons that traveling and taking time off is such an effective way to bring families closer together again. The drive to the destination can be productive depending on who you are but if it is a family that is quiet on the road it is still positively contagious being in the car with your family. It is healthy for parents to get away from work for a bit and focus more on their family. When going on these trips, the goal is to have no stress, have fun, and spend time with your loved ones.

It is always important to get intakes on topics like this from others who have similar minds. I had the opportunity to interview some staff and students from Lowellville who talked to me about this and had open thoughts about it. Mrs. Kerpsack, a media teacher in Lowellville, has a strong agreement that vacations are very necessary physically and mentally for everyone around the world. “Yes, I think vacations are necessary for everybody, I think you need time to kind of unplug and get away from reality a little bit. Get away from work and other things, kind of have some time.” She believes that the most important aspect of vacation is being with your family and growing the connections that you have with them. Traveling and getting away from reality is such an amazing experience to have and enjoy. If you ever feel like you need a break then getting away from the real world is the solution for you.
